Sports in the D

The Pistons started first, against the Dallas Mavericks. I think the Piston-Maverick game was in the second quarter when the Red Wings started their game against the St. Louis Blues.

I spent much of the evening flipping back and forth between the two games, but the Pistons had most of my attention. They played very well tonight. They were ahead of the Mavericks the entire game, leading by more than twenty points at times.

The Mavericks were closing the gap as the final minutes ticked off, but when the time ran out, the final score was Mavericks 91 and Pistons 98.

Reggie Jackson was very impressive tonight.

The Red Wings and the Blues were starting their third period when the basketball game ended. The score was still Blues 1 – Red Wings 0, which it had been since the first period. The score only changed within the last minute when the Blues shot the puck all the way across the ring and right into the goal. So, bummer there.

Major League Baseball is finally starting up. Though it’s not on TV, the Tigers’ pitchers and catchers have reported in and had their first workout yesterday. The first Spring Training game is next week, against the Moccasins, but I don’t think it will be on TV.

It doesn’t look like the Tigers will have a Spring Training game on TV until they play the Yankees on March 11. The Tigers will start their Regular Season on April 3rd, against the White Sox.

Another Brady Bowl

During most of the game, I was thinking the title of this blog entry would be “Not Every Bowl Can Be A Brady Bowl”, but things got turned around in the fourth quarter.

I spent the day at mom and dad’s. We had a lot of food, chicken wings and ribs off the smoker, plus a bunch of other stuff to munch on while we watched the game.

I admit, I considered rooting for the Falcons, but in the end I decided to root for Patriots again. First, because I’d always considered the Pats to be one of my backup teams. Second, because Tom Brady was Michigan’s quarterback back  in the day. So, I decided I’d stick with the Patriots.

I know about the controversy surrounding the Patriots last Super Bowl victory, but, eh, I decided that I didn’t care.

I would have been perfectly fine if the Falcons won, though. The Falcons had a very good lead for most of the game. They were beating the hell out of the Patriots, sacking Brady and all that. But I guess Brady found his arm at some point during the fourth quarter and screwed it back in.

The Patriots scored a few times and the fourth quarter ended with a 28-28 tie. An overtime was added and the Patriots landed another touchdown. Game ended with the Patriots 34 and the Falcon 28.

Rob Darnell lives in a nice neighborhood. His office window looks out on a lake. He has a cat named Buddy and a dog named Luci. Not the Red Wings too!

Well, shit. I was hoping the Red Wings would give me some relief from this torture and for a good part of the game, it looked like they just might. The Red Wings were leading, the score was 3-2, but then the Bruins scored in the third period.

An overtime was added. Looked like the overtime would end without the tie broken. But, with a couple seconds left on the clock, the Bruins scored again.

Damn, damn, damnity, damn

Urgh!

Jesus Christ, the Pistons kept missing their shots. Seems like every time I turn on a Piston game, this is what I see. The Pistons dragging behind the other team.

Tonight’s game was against the Kings. In the third quarter, the Piston were about ten points behind the Kings, but they brought their score up. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Pistons were three points behind.

The Pistons had plenty of chances to get ahead of the Kings, but they kept missing their shots.

Lately while watching my teams lose, I get so mad that my bitching doesn’t make sense. My words don’t come together in a proper sentence. It’s been like that since the Wolverines lost to the Buckeyes. After the Wolverine-Buckeye game, I watched the Lions blow their first place standing and their Wildcard, and the Wolverines lost the Orange Bowl.

My teams are killing me.

Can any of my teams beat the most hated foes?

*grumble* *grumble* *mutter* *sneer* *scoff*

Grrr.

First Michigan lost to Ohio State. >:(

Then, last night, the Lions lost to the Cowboys. >:(

Through most of the first half, the Lions looked good and we thought they were going to do it, but of course not.

I guess the refs made some questionable calls. There was what appeared to be a facemask grab committed by a Cowboy as he was about to cross into the end zone. I think the refs decided it was a touch, not a grab. Maybe it was, I dunno.

Another time, Caldwell was calling for a timeout. It looked like he’d called for the timeout a few times, but the clock was still ticking. Caldwell looked pissed.

That’s what I noticed. But, even if the refs didn’t make a single bad call, the Lions still would’ve lost. Looked like their performance dropped in the second half. Prater even missed a field goal. The final score was 21-42. Yay. >:(

So, now the Lions and the Packers share the NFC North’s top shelf, with 9-8 each. The Lions and the Packers will have the Sunday Night Football slot on, well, Sunday night. That will be the last game of the regular season.

Also, Friday night, Michigan plays Florida State in the Orange Bowl. I know Michigan will win. Wish I could say the same about the Lions when they play the Packers on Sunday.

What did the Lions do to the Giants?

Eh, not much.

Yesterday, the Lions managed to get two field goals, while the Giants got one field goal and… two touchdowns. The final score was 6-17 and the Lions are now 9-5.

The Lions are still in first place, but they’re now leading the NFC North by only one. The regular season has two games left. Although the Vikings lost yesterday and are no longer a threat, the Packers did not lose.

Next week the Lions have the Monday Night Football slot with the Dallas Cowboys. I hate the Cowboys, not as much as I hate the Buckeyes, but still….

The Cowboys are leading the NFC East. They’re currently 12-2. Good Luck against that, Lions. If Stafford and them can beat the Cowboys next Monday, I’d be impressed. But after their loss to the Giants yesterday, I’m preparing for the worst.

So, yeah, the Lions beat the Bears on Sunday. It might have gone the other way if the Bears hadn’t had a few penalties thrown at them in the end and gotten backed up to, I think it was 25 yards. Far enough from the goal post to prevent them from kicking a field goal and tying the score.

So, the Lions won, 20-17, and their first place standing is looking more secure. I’d feel better if the Vikings and the Packers had lost their games, but they didn’t. So, the Vikings and Packers are still two behind the Lions and there are three games left for the regular season.

The Lions play the Giants on the 18th. If they can beat the Giants, that’d be great.

In case you didn’t know, the Lions are in first place

Yep, that’s right. The Detroit Lions are the top NFC North Team. Their position on the list looks secure enough for the time being. The Lions are 8-4. The Vikings and the Packers are below the Lions and tied with 6-6.

The Bears are hanging there at the bottom with a 3-9. So, I’m not too worried about them. But if they beat the Lions this coming Sunday, that would royally suck.

So, what this means is, if the Lions can hold their place through the last four games of the regular season, they’ll be in the playoffs for sure. The Packers or the Vikings would have to win two and the Lions would have to lose two for the Lions’ first place standing to be lost.

Hey, the Cubs made it to the World Series this year and won it. Can the Lions make it to the Super Bowl and win it? Please.
